Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the SRA recruitment process
Updated 1 October 2026
Our approach
AI tools can be helpful when applying for roles and preparing for interviews. We encourage candidates to use them responsibly.
The most important principle is that your application and any subsequent assessment must accurately reflect your own skills, experience, knowledge and judgement. AI should support how you present your experience, not create or replace it.
We are committed to a fair selection process and will withdraw candidates from the recruitment process where AI has been used inappropriately.
Using AI in your application
We want to understand who you are, what you have achieved, and how your experience aligns with the role.
Acceptable uses of AI
You may use AI to:
- improve spelling, grammar and clarity
- help structure responses
- refine your own draft answers to communicate your experience more effectively.
Unacceptable uses of AI
You must not use AI to:
- invent, exaggerate or misrepresent experience, qualifications or achievements
- generate responses that do not reflect your own experience
- create fictitious examples
- complete any task intended to assess your own capability.
Before submitting your application, make sure all information (including CV's, cover letters and supporting statements) are accurate and reflect your own skills, experience, style and achievements.
Preparing for an assessment and selection process.
AI can be useful for interview preparation. For example, you may use it to:
- research the SRA and the legal services market
- explore topics relevant to the role
- generate and practise interview questions.
During assessments
Unless we tell you otherwise, AI must not be used during any form of assessment activity, including interviews, written exercises, presentations, psychometric assessments or assessment centre exercises.
Occasionally, and for some roles, AI capability may form part of the assessment. If this applies, we will explain clearly in advance how AI may be used and what we will assess.
Reasonable adjustments
If you intend to use AI as part of a reasonable adjustment, please discuss this with our recruitment team before your assessment.
If you're unsure
If you are unsure whether a particular use of AI is appropriate, please speak to our recruitment team before completing the activity or assessment.
Why this matters?
Recruitment decisions are based on merit, so it is important that applications and assessment outcomes accurately reflect a candidate's own skills, experience and judgement.
Applications and assessments are reviewed by people throughout the recruitment process.
Suspected misuse of AI may be investigated we will withdraw candidates from the recruitment process where inappropriate use is identified at any stage.
