Warning: Document misusing the name of Frettens LLP

A document purporting to be an 'Approved Court Judgment' has been sent misusing the name of Frettens LLP in relation to a class action.

What is the scam?

A document purporting to be an 'Approved Court Judgment' has been sent to a member of the public in relation to a class action.

The SRA has seen a supposed Approved Court Judgment in relation to a class action.  The Judgment states that Anna Curtis, Sarah Sillar and Frettons LLP are acting for the Claimants in relation to the action. The SRA has also been informed that a member of the public has received emails from a company attaching the 'Approved Court Judgment' and claiming that it can act to recover assets in the action for an advance fee.

The supposed 'Approved Court Judgment' misuses the name a genuine firm of solicitors and two genuine solicitors (see below).

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Frettens LLP.

The SRA authorises and regulates genuine solicitors called Anna Curtis and Sarah Sillar who are both employees at Frettens LLP.

The genuine firm of Frettens LLP and genuine solicitors, Anna Curtis and Sarah Sillar have confirmed they do not have any connection with the document referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
