Warning: Correspondence misusing the name of TLT LLP

30 May 2024

Correspondence has been sent misusing the name of 'Andrew Bell' and 'TLT LLP' in relation to a purported lease agreement.

What is the scam?

Correspondence has been sent to an energy company purporting to be a property lease agreement which falsely claims to have been prepared and stamped by a solicitor (see below).

The documents seen by the SRA misuse the name, logo, telephone number and address of a genuine firm of solicitors.

The email address provided is andrewbell@consultant.com.

Any business or transactions through the email address andrewbell@consultant.com are not undertaken by an individual or firm of solicitors authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called TLT LLP whose head office address is 1 Redcliff Street, Bristol, BS1 6TP. Its telephone number is 03330060000 and the email addresses use the domain '@TLT.com'.

The SRA also authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Andrew Bell who is employed at the genuine firm of TLT LLP.

TLT LLP has confirmed that neither it, nor its Andrew Bell have any connection to the correspondence referred to in the alert above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
