Warning: Invoice and ID card misusing the name of JMW Solicitors LLP

25 September 2024

An invoice and a copy ID card have been sent misusing the name of JMW Solicitors LLP.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that an invoice has been sent to a member of the public from an individual called 'Micheal Jason' claiming to be an 'Attorney' from a genuine firm of solicitors (see below). The document seen by the SRA claims to be 'Confirmation Stamp Fund Release Approval'.  It also bears a 'stamp' for 'Micheal Jason Law Firm'

The SRA has also been advised that the recipient was also provided with a supposed photo identify verification card for 'Micheal Jason, Defence Attorney'.

Both documents misuse the address of a branch office of a genuine firm (see below).

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a solicitor called 'Micheal Jason'.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called JMW Solicitors LLP which has a branch office at 'Kings House, 36-37 King St, London EC2V 8BB'.

JMW Solicitors LLP has confirmed that it does not have any connection to the documents referred to above and that it does not employ anyone called 'Micheal Jason'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
