An email has been sent and telephone call made to a member of the public from 'Joywin Mathew' claiming to be from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) in relation to the recovery of cryptocurrency (Bitcoin).

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that an email has been sent and a telephone call made to a member of the public purporting to be from a genuine solicitor (see below).

The email was sent from 'joywin.mathew@officialsra.eu' and the telephone number the call was made from is unknown (telephone number was not provided). The email also included a 'Blockchain Financial Transaction Compliance & Execution Statement' document.

Any business or transaction through the above contact details is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Joywin Mathew, whose SRA number is 441989.The genuine solicitor is not employed at the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

The genuine Joywin Mathew is believed to have no connection to the email or telephone call referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?
