Email and document misusing the name of Ashraf Ali and the name and details of Noor Solicitors Limited in relation to the recovery of investment funds.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen a document titled a 'Power of Attorney' misusing the name and details of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below).

The email was sent from the email address 'office@noorfirm.com' and references the genuine firm (see below) and its genuine branch office address. A telephone number was also provided '+44 20 8097 6223'.

An identification card was also provided which misuses the name and SRA number of a genuine solicitor (see below), in which the individual claims to be a lawyer.

Any business or transaction through the above contact details or document is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm of solicitors called Noor Solicitors Limited (SRA number 8009613). Its genuine telephone number is 0121 257 5581 and the email domain used by the firm is @noorsolicitors.com.

Their branch office (SRA number 8016367) address is 158-160 Wellingborough Road, Northampton, NN1 4DU.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Ashraf Ali, whose SRA number is 650997. Ashraf Ali is a Director at the genuine firm Noor Solicitors Limited.

The genuine firm Noor Solicitors Limited and the genuine solicitor Ashraf Ali has confirmed that they have no connection to the matter referred to in the above alert.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.

The SRA has seen that further documents have been sent to a member of the public misusing the name and details of a genuine firm of solicitors, as described above (see genuine firm details above).

A 'Power of Attorney', a 'KYC form' and a purported Commercial Court judgment was provided. The 'KYC form' uses the name of the genuine firm as a watermark on the document and the purported Commercial Court judgment misuses the names of genuine of solicitors (see below).

As with the original alert above, a document titled 'Power of Attorney' lists the email address 'office@noorfirm.com' and references the genuine firm (see below) and its genuine branch office address. It also refers to the telephone number '+44 20 8097 6223'.

Any business or transactions through the above contact details or documents are not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Alia Taha, whose SRA number is 517020. The genuine solicitor is not employed at the genuine firm Noor Solicitors Limited.

The genuine firm Noor Solicitors Limited and the genuine solicitors Ashraf Ali and Alia Taha have confirmed that they have no connection to the matter referred to in the above alert.
