Warning: Email claiming to be from 'Richard Bamford' of 'Richard Bamford Law'

An email has been sent claiming to be from 'Richard Bamford' of 'Richard Bamford Law' regarding an alleged inheritance.

What is the scam?

The SRA has been informed that a member of the public has received correspondence from 'Richard Bamford', who claims to be to be acting for a client and their estate.

The email seen by the SRA advises the recipient that the deceased client shared the same surname as the recipient, as such the recipient is said to be a potential beneficiary.

The email has been sent from the email address richard@richardbamfordlaw.co.uk.

A website at 'www. richardbamfordlaw.co.uk' is also operating providing. The website falsely claims that the entity is a solicitor's firm. The website provides a telephone number +44 20 3769 3219, an email address info@richardbamfordlaw.co.uk and a postal address 37 Temple St, Birmingham B2 5DP, UK.

Any business or transaction through the above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm of solicitors called 'Richard Bamford Law', nor do we authorise or regulate a solicitor called 'Richard Bamford'.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
