Warning: 'Crypto Legal Aid' falsely claiming to be regulated by the SRA

22 October 2026

'Crypto Legal Aid' is falsely claiming to be regulated by the SRA.

What is the scam?

A member of the public has been contacted by an individual claiming to be from 'Crypto Legal Aid' in relation to the transfer of cryptocurrency. The exchange took place on the social messaging platform Telegram. The SRA understands that the individual referred to himself as 'Dennis Baxter'. The member of the public was also provided with documents, one of which is an image of a cryptocurrency licence which falsely claims that 'Crypto Legal Aid' is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The document provides a false SRA ID number and misuses the SRA logo.

The SRA does not authorise or regulate a firm named 'Crypto Legal Aid' or an individual by the name of 'Dennis Baxter'.

Any business or transaction through the company or individual referred to above is not undertaken by an individual or company authorised and regulated by the SRA.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
