Emails have been sent misusing the name and details of Hausfeld & Co LLP in relation to a compensation claim.

What is the scam?

The SRA has seen emails that have been sent misusing the name and details of a genuine firm (see below).

The first email was sent in German and related to a supposed compensation claim with 'McAfee'. The email asks the recipient to confirm their contact details and was sent from the email address 'thu_mcfee@gmx.com'. This email also contains the contact details '+43 1 000 0000', 'info@refund-services.de' and Hausfeld & Co LLP, 12 Gough Square, London EC4A 3DW, UK Commercial Register Number: FN 123456a.

The second email was sent in English and related to a supposed compensation claim. The email asks the recipient to confirm their name and contact details and was sent from the email address '8532lee_addyson@gmx.com'. The email contains a signatory 'Your Claims Department, Hausfeld & Co LLP, 12 Gough Square, London EC4A 3DW, UK Registriert unter HRB 7890'.

Any business or transaction through the email addresses or telephone number shown above is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine firm called Hausfeld & Co. LLP (SRA number 513826). The genuine firm's head office address is 2nd Floor, 12 Gough Square, London, EC4A 3DW, email domain is @hausfeld.com and telephone number 02076655000.

The firm has confirmed it has no connection to the emails referred to in the alert above.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
