We have announced that Caroline Corby will take up the role of Chair of the SRA Board later this year, following a competitive recruitment process. Caroline's appointment marks an important step as we continue to strengthen our leadership and deliver our vision of a modern, intelligence-led regulator focused on protecting consumers and building public confidence. Two additional Board members will also join in January as part of our ongoing board renewal programme.
We are inviting your views on proposed updates to the Statement of Solicitor Competence and functioning legal knowledge (FLK) designed to make sure both continue to reflect modern ways of working and considerations. Consultation on the proposed changes, which have been informed through prior engagement with the nearly 150 solicitors, law firms, educators, representative bodies and academics, runs until 3 December.

Last month we announced some changes to how the SQE1 assessment within the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) will be structured from January 2027. To help you understand what is changing, plus how the wider assessment works read a recently published blog by our Head of Education and Training, Maxine Warr.
We recently released results from the July 2026 sitting of SQE1. The results show a small year-on-year increase in pass rates, with 42% of candidates passing in July 2026, compared with 41% the previous July. Pass rates for first-time sitters also rose from 46% to 47% with more than 6,300 candidates completing the July assessments.

The Financial Conduct Authority has provided more detail on how it will work with the legal sector when it takes on responsibility for anti-money laundering (AML) supervision. In particular how regulators, firms and law enforcement will work together to make the system harder for criminals to exploit.
If you hold assets owned, held, or controlled by a designated person, you need to submit a report to the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation by the end of November. HM Treasury reviews frozen assets to update its records and to capture any changes during the reporting period every year.
HMRC has issued interim guidance following new rules, which came into effect in August, meaning anyone working as a tax adviser cannot interact with them on behalf of a client unless they are registered. There are exemptions to this rule, but queries about when they apply have been raised.
The government has released its Anti-Money Laundering and Asset Recovery (AMLAR) Strategy for 2026-2029. This three-year programme of work aims to enhance both the UK's defences against money laundering and the recovery of the proceeds of crime. Find out what it might mean for you and your firm.

Take our quiz to test your knowledge on how Politically Exposed Persons, or PEPs, present an elevated money laundering risk because of their access to public influence, public funds or both. The risk may extend to family members and known close associates, and may change over time if a client's circumstances alter.
