Statement

Information for clients, employees and creditors of PM Law

We were alerted to the unexpected closure of PM Law Ltd at 250 Shepcote Lane, Sheffield, and associated firms on Monday 2 February.

This is distressing news for all involved, not least those that had on-going matters with the firm.

We launched an immediate investigation into PM Law on Monday 2 February and contacted the firm to make sure client interests are protected properly. As a result of our initial investigation, we have taken the decision to intervene into the group of firms.

We are working to quickly gather relevant information that can be shared with those that have been impacted.

Find out more information about the immediate steps we have taken.

Clients

What happens to my matter?

PM Law (and related firms) have announced that they have closed. If you had ongoing work with any of the firms involved, you will need to find a new lawyer to help you and progress your matter.

If you need help finding a solicitor, you can use the Law Society's Find a Solicitor site. Simply put your postcode in to find law firms near to you.

How can I access my file/paperwork?

You might not need your file to instruct a new lawyer.

Firstly, gather together all the communications and documents you have received connected to your matter, along with details of others/other lawyers involved in the transaction (if you know them). This may be enough for a new lawyer to begin to get your legal work back on track.

If you have an ongoing matter with PM Law or associated firms, and your file can be found and identified, our intervention agents (solicitors who work for us) will look to get in contact with you to ask what you want done with your papers.

Please be aware that due to the volume of files we anticipate seizing it may take some time before we are able to do this. Our agents will look to prioritise identifying clients with the most immediate/urgent legal issues to be resolved.

Our archive team will also take control of all documents relating to closed matters held by the firm, such as copies of deeds and wills. If you think you had such files held by one of these firms, you can fill in our form to request their return.

What if I have an urgent matter?

Our intervention agents will prioritise trying to identify and contact clients with the most urgent or imminent matters. Where such cases are identified, they will attempt to contact you to advise you of the need to instruct another solicitor or law firm to progress the work.

In some exceptional circumstances where there is no time for this to happen — for example if you are due to complete on a house sale or purchase within a few days of the intervention—the agent may, at their discretion, be able to act on your behalf on an emergency basis.

What happens to my money?

Any money in the firm's bank accounts at the time of intervention will be held by us in our Statutory Trust Fund while we find out who it belongs to. Once we have completed that process, we will look to return money to its owners.

Please note, this process may take some time if a firm’s accounts are not in good order.

If a solicitor was holding your money and we are not able to return it to you, for example if it has gone missing, you may be able to make an application to our compensation fund. This is a discretionary fund with set criteria for making a claim and we will need to prioritise dealing with urgent claims soonest.

Further details on making an application to reclaim money held by a firm we have intervened into are available on our website.

Contacting our intervention agents

If you were a client or former client of PM Law Ltd or its associated firms, you do not need to contact either us or our agent at this time.

Where they can identify your details our agents will get in touch with you. But please note this may take some time, and our agents will be prioritising identifying and contacting clients with the most urgent or imminent legal matters that need resolving.

If you need to make urgent contact with an intervention agent, please use the following details:

John Owen
Gordons LLP
1 New Augustus Street
Bradford BD1 5LL

Employees

We appreciate that this is a very difficult time if you have lost your job following PM Law’s sudden closure.

Should you need it, the Solicitors Charity and LawCare are both able to provide wellbeing support to members of the legal profession.

Your contract of employment is personal to you and your former employer. Unfortunately, we are unable to assume any rights or obligations in relation to your contract.

Your former employer remains liable to you for your salary, references and the issue of a P45.

You should consider seeking independent legal advice if you are unable to get hold of the above. Contacting Citizens Advice might be a good place to start, or if you are a member of a trade union, they may be able to help.

Trainees

If

  • you are a trainee on the LPC route, who has completed training with the firm but has not yet had it signed off, or
  • you are on the SQE route and have any Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) not yet signed off

please contact admissions so we can discuss your situation.

If you have not completed your full training or QWE requirements, you will need to find a new firm to complete the remainder of your training/QWE.

If you are on the LPC route you may wish to consider making an equivalent means application.

Creditors

We cannot assume any liability or obligation for trade debts relating to a firm that we regulate. Managers of any authorised body, or a recognised sole practice are responsible for all trade debts.

You should consider seeking independent legal advice if you are finding it difficult to get payment. You might also want to talk to your insurer to see if you are covered for any losses.

What's happened at the firm?

We are investigating issues raised that have led to this intervention to see if any additional action is necessary. At this stage of our work, no further details can be disclosed.

It is only if further action becomes necessary that any information is released into the public domain. There is no timescale for how long this work will take.

Further information about interventions is available on our Interventions pages.
